🔍 Algo Spotlight #10 | BTST (Buy Today, Sell Tomorrow)

NSE | Equity | Positional | Overnight Strategy

BTST (Buy Today, Sell Tomorrow) is a rule-based swing strategy that aims to capture short-term momentum in the equity market. Instead of reacting emotionally to market moves, the algorithm scans for high-probability opportunities and executes trades based on predefined conditions.

Unlike intraday strategies that close all positions before the market ends, BTST identifies potential opportunities near the close, carries the position overnight, and looks to benefit from the next day’s price movement. The goal is to capture short-term momentum while following a completely rule-based approach.

What makes BTST different?

Most traders either:

  • Chase momentum too late.

  • Exit winning positions too early.

  • Or let emotions influence overnight decisions.

BTST removes these emotional decisions by following predefined entry and exit rules. Every trade is executed based on the strategy’s logic—not market noise or guesswork.

How the strategy works

Scans the equity market for momentum-based opportunities near the closing session.

Takes positions only when the strategy’s conditions are satisfied.

Holds the trade overnight to participate in potential next-day continuation.

Exits according to predefined strategy rules, ensuring disciplined execution.

Best suited for traders who:

  • Prefer short-term positional trading over intraday.

  • Want to capture overnight momentum in equities.

  • Believe in systematic trading instead of emotional decision-making.

  • Want an automated approach to BTST opportunities.

Things to remember

Like every systematic strategy, BTST will not trade every single day. It waits patiently for suitable market conditions before entering a position.

Since positions are carried overnight, gap-up and gap-down movements are naturally part of the strategy. This makes disciplined risk management an important aspect of BTST trading.

Community Discussion

Have you ever held a stock overnight expecting the trend to continue the next day?

  • Did the momentum continue as expected?

  • Or did an overnight gap completely change the outcome?

But as per Algo Trade Metrics of this strategy it has taken trades almost everyday. If it traded like this daily , does we get any profit after including all the charges ?

And the returns also showing differently on another page.

Not only for this strategy , I observed the same for other investing algos also. Please clarify these things.

Hi @Avinash BTST can take trades regularly depending on the market conditions. The strategy analyzes the market every trading day, and whenever its entry criteria are met, it generates trades. So, seeing frequent trades is completely normal and is based on the algorithm’s analysis rather than a fixed trading frequency.

Regarding the returns showning different on different pages, seeing a discrepancy or would like us to explain the numbers in detail, please reach out to us at support@stratzy.in
